Gentoo Portrait

Gentoo Penguin

A Gentoo penguin is returnng to his family after a day long trip to fish for food. The colony is still about half a mile away so he has a long walk back there.

Gentoos are the third largest species of penguin growing from between 50 and 90 cm and can weigh up to 8kg.

Gentoos are relatively reliant on krill as a food source, but they also take small fish as well to supplement their diet.

There are about 6,000 adult Gentoos on Sea Lion Island, some within 100m of the lodge, I can definitely recommend watching them come into shore at dusk, it’s quite a sight!
