Seal Pup Montage
This young Elephant Seal is about 1 month old, and he is already about 6 feet long. He still lives on the beach and stays away from the water, he won’t take to the sea until he is about 3 months old and strong enough to hunt on his own.
When he grows up he could be up to 5000 lbs in weight, be up to 3 metres long and live for about 20 years. He will also grow the distinctive long nose that gives the species their name “Elephant Seals”.
Sea Lion Island in the Falklands is a great place to see the Elephant Seals which come ashore from October onwards to give birth and leave in March once they have moulted.
As a point of vanity if you look in his eyes you can see my wife and I taking the picture.
