Black Browed Albatross Soaring

The Hike to get to this particular colony on Saunders Island took about 3 hours along sheep trails in the steep cliff side. However it was definitely worth the walk. The birds soar over you, land next to you and go about their daily routines without taking any notice of you at all.

As you can see from the photo the birds really do soar past at eye level, this particular bird was within 10ft of where we were sitting.

The Black-browed Albatross is a medium-sized albatross, at 80–95 cm long with a 200–240 cm wingspan and an average weight of 2.9–4.7 kg.

These majestic birds can have a natural lifespan of over 70 years.
