Kilauea Sunset

This spectacular sunset is due to the volcano erupting and the large amount of fumes that it puts into the air giving the amazing effect that we can see here.
We were very lucky to see such a sunset as the volcano had been covered in cloud and fumes all day so much so that a large amount of the roads on the island were shut due to dangerous gases.
Kilauea is one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of Hawai?i. In Hawaiian, the word k?lauea means "spewing" or "much spreading", in reference to the mountain's frequent outpouring of lava. Lava has been issuing continuously since January 1983. In 1998 K?lauea was said to be the most active volcano on the Earth, an invaluable resource for volcanologists, and was said to be the planet's most visited active volcano. The volume of erupted material could pave a road across the world 3 times. Lava less than 1000 years old covers 90% of Kilauea.
K?lauea is the most recent of a series of volcanoes that have created the Hawai?ian Archipelago, as the Pacific Plate has moved and is moving over the Hawai?i hotspot. These eruptions occur in the Pu?u ???? vent. Thirty-three eruptions have taken place since 1952 not including the current episode.
In local belief the volcano is the home of the Hawai?ian goddess of volcanoes, Pele. Legend says that eruptions take place whenever the goddess is angry. These concepts are included in tribal chants practiced by residents of the region.
